About

BAER Ceramics was created when husband and wife, Jess Baer and Zach Hastings, decided to finally collaborate to create the objects they wanted to see in their home. While Zach focuses on design and usability, Jess carries the ceramic process to completion while exploring color and application. Together they design everyday functional ceramic pieces for your home and life style with a modern and minimalist aesthetic.

Process

When designing ceramic objects a lot of time and consideration is spent at the beginning of the process: sketching, holding items, thinking about how they feel in your hand. Once the piece is finalized in sketch form, the idea is handed to Zach to give it 3D life via CAD software. Prototypes of the piece are 3D printed in plastic to confirm the right dimensions and proportions. The piece then goes through the CAD process again, but this time the slipcast mold is designed around the piece and then 3D printed. At this point Jess picks up the process and makes a silicone mother mold from the 3D mold print out, and baby plaster molds are cast. Now the final ceramic piece can be cast, bisqued, and glazed.
